For 13 years, gamers have been waiting for November 19, the day “Grand Theft Auto VI” is set to be released. A major competing title won’t hit the market until February, and for Take-Two Interactive, the company behind the game, this is no ordinary release either. A large portion of the expected growth is expected to come from this single title. The industry is likely to be watching the launch very closely. What happens when a single game is expected to carry an entire fiscal year?

From Scotland to game consoles around the world

The "Grand Theft Auto" series dates back to 1997. The first installment was developed by the Scottish studio DMA Design, which is now part of Take-Two Interactive as Rockstar North. The most recent main installment, “Grand Theft Auto V” was released in 2013 and is one of the industry’s most profitable games (Reuters, 6.11.2025). To date, it has sold more than 230 million copies (Take-Two Interactive, 6.08.2026). The sequel will be judged against this success. Rockstar delayed it twice, most recently to its current release date, citing the need for final polishing (Reuters, 6.08.2025). At launch, it will initially be available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (BR24, 22.06.2026).

Take Two: A Lot Rests on One Title

For Take-Two Interactive, the release is more than just a product launch. The company expects net bookings of $8.0 to $8.2 billion for the fiscal year ending in March 2027. This metric measures the value of games and content sold, regardless of when they are recognized as revenue. Management attributes the expected growth primarily to “Grand Theft Auto VI” (Take-Two Interactive, 21.05.2026). It is therefore likely to be concentrated in the months following the game’s launch.

Nevertheless, there is a solid foundation. Approximately 65 percent of bookings are expected to come from recurring revenue, that is, from in-game purchases within existing games (Take-Two Interactive, 21.05.2026). This includes “GTA Online,” which, according to CEO Strauss Zelnick, is set to continue even after the sequel’s launch (Finanztrends, 5.10.2026).

This is offset by a cost risk. According to some estimates, the development of the new game may have cost up to $3 billion; Take-Two has not provided any figures on this (BR24, 22.06.2026). The fact that even major titles can fall short of expectations is demonstrated by competitor Electronic Arts. “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” reached only about half of the expected player count by the end of 2024 (Electronic Arts, 22.01.2025). “Battlefield 6” on the other hand, exceeded expectations a year later (Reuters, 3.02.2026).

Xbox: Hosts Under Pressure

Take-Two isn’t celebrating the release alone, as one of the platforms is Microsoft. “Grand Theft Auto VI” is also coming to Xbox. In late September, Take-Two announced a new, long-term agreement with Microsoft that covers all Xbox devices. When Microsoft sells Take-Two games digitally, it pays the wholesale price or an agreed-upon revenue share (Take-Two Interactive, 30.09.2026). If sales go well, the platform stands to profit as well.

The host, however, is under pressure itself. In the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025/26 (April through June), Microsoft grew by 18 percent overall. Revenue from Xbox content and services, however, fell by 10 percent, according to the quarterly report released on 29.07.2026. In early July, the company announced the largest restructuring in Xbox’s history. Approximately 3 200 jobs will be cut, four studios are leaving the division, and CEO Asha Sharma described the business as unhealthy (Deadline, 6.07.2026). According to an internal memo, margins are several times lower than those of the competition (NPR, 9.07.2026).

This caution is also evident in its own lineup. Microsoft postponed its role-playing game “Fable” from fall 2026 to February 2027. Xbox cited the packed release schedule and the desire to give the game its own window as the reasons for the delay. Microsoft also included “GTA VI” on its list of major titles for 2026 (heise, 29.05.2026). Microsoft also anticipated declining hardware sales for the quarter ending in September (Microsoft, 29.07.2026). Whether “Grand Theft Auto VI” will change that may not become clear until the figures for the holiday quarter are released.

Classification

November 19 should reveal just how much a single title can carry. If the launch is successful, Take-Two could demonstrate that major releases can be reliably planned. A rocky start, on the other hand, would highlight just how heavily the business relies on a few brands. The outcome would also be revealing for the industry as a whole, as market researchers at Newzoo see the game as a major driver for console sales (Newzoo, 10.09.2026). Those watching the sector might pay less attention to the first day of sales than to the months that follow. The key factor would be how long players and platforms remain loyal to the title. Only then could the question posed at the beginning be answered: Can a single game carry an entire fiscal year?
