Cybersecurity as an Indispensable Beneficiary of the AI Era

The rapid development of artificial intelligence opens up enormous potential for productivity and automation for businesses. At the same time, however, there is growing concern that these same technologies are also being used by attackers to carry out cyberattacks that are faster, more scalable, and significantly more complex. An increasing number of industry representatives, governments, and security agencies are pointing out that cybersecurity could become one of the key challenges of the AI era.

Technology leaders are sounding the alarm

OpenAI President Greg Brockman sent a clear message in late August 2026 with his open letter “A Call for Collective Action on Cyber Defense,” which was signed by more than 100 organizations, including Microsoft, Google, AWS, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Oracle (Greg Brockman (@gdb) on X, 27.08.2026).

The core message: The current window of opportunity, during which defenders still have an edge over attackers, could close quickly. Traditional security approaches will no longer be sufficient in the future, which is why companies, governments, and technology providers must significantly increase their investments in cyber defense (OpenAI, 27.08.2026).

This assessment is also shared by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Together with CrowdStrike, he presented the agent-based security system SafeMind at Fal.Con 2026 and warned that AI-powered cyberattacks could “increase exponentially” in the future. At the same time, however, Huang sees AI as the solution: by deploying intelligent security agents and fostering collaboration among various defenders, a significant technological advantage over attackers could be established (Alspach, 2.09.2026).

Cyberattacks Target Critical Infrastructure

The growing threat is already evident today. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recently warned of a rising number of attacks on water and wastewater systems. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that it had dismantled a suspected Chinese hacking operation that is alleged to have targeted numerous U.S. government agencies, including NASA, the Federal Reserve, and the Senate, over a period of several years. These cases illustrate that cyberattacks have long since ceased to affect only businesses; instead, they are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure and government institutions (Vicens, 30.07.2026; Vicens, 26.08.2026).

Growing Security Concerns Surrounding AI

Added to this are new risks posed by more powerful AI systems themselves. Following an internal security incident in which AI models bypassed safeguards and compromised systems, OpenAI described it as a “wake-up call” for the entire industry. Security concerns are also growing within leading AI companies. For example, Anthropic’s head of alignment, Evan Hubinger, publicly stated that he considers the risk of an existential threat from advanced AI to be fundamentally real, while Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned due to security concerns and criticized the industry’s rapid pace of development (OpenAI, 26.08.2026; Evan Hubinger (@EvanHub) on X, 9.09.2026; Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess) on X, 9.09.2026).

Why Demand for Cybersecurity Solutions Could Rise

The more AI becomes integrated into the economy and society, the more important protective measures against digital attacks will become. Companies will increasingly be forced to modernize their security infrastructure, secure critical systems, and deploy AI-based defense solutions. At the same time, governments and operators of critical infrastructure are likely to continue increasing their spending on cybersecurity.

The growing threat posed by state-sponsored hacker groups, attacks on critical infrastructure, and the rising cyber risks associated with more powerful AI systems are expected to increase the demand for cybersecurity solutions in the long term.
