Boliden Reports Higher Third-Quarter Results Amid Operational Developments
Boliden is a Swedish mining and smelting group that extracts base metals (primarily zinc, copper, nickel and lead) alongside precious metals from mines across Europe, then processes them through five smelters into finished products. During the third quarter of 2026, Boliden reported higher operating results compared with the corresponding period of the previous year and the preceding quarter, with operations recovering from the seismic disruption at the Garpenberg mine that weighed heavily on the first half, metal prices climbing further, and several long-running investment projects finally showing real progress. The quarter was, however, opened with a sobering reminder of the industry's inherent risks: a Boliden employee was found deceased at the Boliden Area tailings facility in early October, and the CEO opened his statement by acknowledging this before anything else.
Operating Performance and Project Updates
Boliden reported operating profit, excluding the revaluation of process inventory, of SEK 4,894 million for the third quarter of 2026, compared with SEK 2,752 million in the third quarter of 2025 and SEK 2,872 million in the previous quarter. According to the company, the reported increase reflected a combination of factors, including higher production levels at certain mining and smelting operations, changes in metal prices and the continued recovery of the Garpenberg mine following earlier disruptions. Boliden also reported progress in the ramp-up of its Odda expansion project, noting that the availability of the new roasting furnace increased from 17% in the second quarter to an average of 50% during the third quarter. As with all industrial expansion projects, future operational performance and project outcomes remain subject to execution, market and operational factors.

Key figures behind the Report
Revenue increased from 21,971 MSEK to 30,442 MSEK a year ago, a 39 percent increase reflecting both higher prices and the full contribution of Somincor and Zinkgruvan, acquired in April 2025. Net profit reached 3,888 MSEK, with earnings per share of 13.69 SEK versus 8.07 SEK a year earlier. Return on capital employed (a measure of how efficiently the company generates profit from its invested assets) rose to 19.1 percent on a rolling twelve-month basis, up from 14.3 percent in full-year 2025. Net debt (borrowings minus cash fell slightly to 18,335 MSEK, giving a gearing ratio of 21 percent, the lowest in several quarters. Free cash flow returned to positive territory at 1,121 MSEK, marking a significant turnaround from the negative 2,114 MSEK in Q2.
Aitik's Guidance Update and Tara Operational Challenges
Boliden revised its full-year guidance for the Aitik mine, reducing the expected copper grade from 0.18% to 0.16% while increasing expected milled volumes from 41 million to 42 million tonnes. According to the company, the revision reflects higher waste rock dilution rather than changes to the underlying ore body. Rather than deterioration of the ore body, it was higher waste rock dilution that caused the grade revision. These two effects largely cancel each other out in terms of actual metal production. Over the trailing twelve months, Aitik's cash cost per pound of copper improved sharply, from 90 to 62 US cents, as production volumes increased. Tara, the Irish zinc mine, is a more genuine concern: grade has fallen to 4.7 percent zinc from 5.1 percent in the previous quarter, and challenging ground conditions are causing production delays.
Copper and Precious Metals Price Developments
Commodity market conditions varied during the quarter. Copper averaged USD 14,104 per tonne, representing an increase of 44% compared with the same period of the previous year, while zinc prices were 35% higher over the same comparison period.
In contrast, gold and silver prices declined by 6% and 14%, respectively, compared with the previous quarter. Market participants have attributed part of this development to changes in real interest rate expectations, which can influence the relative attractiveness of non-yielding assets.
Sulphuric acid prices, an important source of by-product revenue for Boliden's smelting operations, remained above historical averages, although they were lower than in the second quarter.
Based on the company's published sensitivity analysis, Boliden estimates that a 10% increase in the copper price would have a positive impact of approximately SEK 1.9 billion on annual operating profit. Actual results may differ depending on market conditions and other operational factors.
Nexa Transaction and Laver Project Update
Two strategic developments are expected to be relevant for Boliden's future operations. In August, Boliden announced an agreement to acquire a 64.68% stake in Nexa Resources through a share-based transaction. Subject to shareholder approval at the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for 23 November, as well as the satisfaction of applicable regulatory conditions, the transaction would expand Boliden's exposure to zinc and silver mining operations in Latin America. Upon completion, Votorantim is expected to hold approximately 7% of Boliden's shares.
As with any acquisition, the transaction is subject to execution, integration and regulatory considerations, and its anticipated benefits may depend on a range of operational and market factors.
Separately, the Swedish government upheld Boliden's mining concession for the Laver copper project. According to the company, the deposit could represent a significant source of future copper production. No investment decision is currently expected before approximately 2030.
Boliden is expected to provide its full-year 2027 guidance on 8 December. Market participants may use this update to assess management's expectations regarding the company's operational priorities, projects and business development initiatives.
