Volvo Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of heavy trucks, construction equipment, buses, and marine engines. It sells under brands including Volvo Trucks, Mack, and Renault Trucks, and operates in every major region. Heading into the third quarter of 2026, the backdrop was cautious. While Europe’s truck market had been recovering steadily, North America, Volvo’s most lucrative market, had been slow to gain momentum. This changed in Q3, as reflected in the results.

Sales volumes and adjusted operating profitability increased in Q3 2026

The company reported higher sales volumes and adjusted operating profitability during the period.Net sales (total revenue from products and services sold) increased by 8% to SEK 119.5 billion compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. More significantly, adjusted operating income (profit from core operations excluding exceptional items) rose to SEK 14.7 billion from SEK 11.7 billion a year earlier. The adjusted operating margin (the share of sales retained as adjusted operating profit) reached 12.3%, compared with 10.6% in Q3 2025.

This was a genuine improvement, not a statistical fluke, driven by real demand rather than cost cutting alone. The CEO’s tone was measured yet clearly positive, and the figures back up this optimism.

Key Figures behind the Report

The truck division, which accounts for around 68% of group sales, highlights the recovery. Truck sales grew by 10% to SEK 81.6 billion, while the division’s adjusted operating margin increased from 9.1% to 11.1%. This marks a significant turnaround for a segment that had been struggling.

Order intake across the group increased by 26% compared to a year ago, suggesting that customers are committing to future purchases with greater confidence.

Operating cash flow in industrial operations swung from negative SEK 1.7 billion a year ago to positive SEK 7.2 billion. This turnaround reflects both stronger profits and more disciplined working capital management (how efficiently the company manages its inventory and receivables).

Earnings per share rose 43% to SEK 5.29 from SEK 3.71. The net financial position in industrial operations stood at SEK 43.8 billion (meaning the company holds substantially more financial assets than it owes in industrial debt).

Developments across business segments

At first glance, construction equipment and buses decreased during the quarter, in particular total construction equipment deliveries decreased by 34%, while bus volumes declined by 9%.

A closer look, however, shows that the decline in construction equipment deliveries is almost entirely due to the sale of SDLG, a Chinese budget brand, in 2025. Deliveries of Volvo-branded machines actually increased by 8%, and the division’s adjusted operating margin reached a strong 16.1%.

Buses remain genuinely weak. The adjusted operating margin fell from 12.6% to 7.7%, partly due to lower volumes in Brazil and Mexico, and the absence of a non-recurring property gain that boosted the previous year’s result. This weakness is real.

Volvo Penta (the marine and industrial engine division) is a strong performer that receives relatively little attention. Its adjusted operating margin reached 21.1%, and data center power generation now represents 32% of its order book, providing a increasingly reliable source of growth.

Another notable point is the U.S. tariff refunds. Refunds totaling  SEK 1.2 billion exceeded tariff costs during the quarter, producing a net benefit of SEK 0.2 billion. This will not recur in the same form. Q4 guidance already points to a roughly neutral net tariff impact, with tariff costs offset by a separate Section 232 manufacturing refund that has not yet been filed for. These moving parts make earnings harder to predict in the coming quarters.

The Market Backdrop

The European heavy-duty truck market grew by 8% through September, supported by solid replacement demand and high fleet utilization (how intensively operators use their vehicles).

Although North American retail sales are still down 6% since the start of the year, order books for 2027 opened in September, and orders are coming in strongly.

Brazil remains weak due to high interest rates and depleted government subsidy funding. Meanwhile, India is expanding rapidly, with growth of 28%, and Volvo is well positioned there.

Competition in the market for battery-electric trucks is intensifying in Europe. Volvo’s share of the electric heavy-duty truck market fell from 28% to 14%  year-on-year, which is  a trend to watch as more brands enter the market.

What Comes Next

The key variables for Q4 and beyond are increased  North American production, the timing and size of the Section 232 refund, and the evolution of antitrust litigation costs linked to a 2016 European Commission settlement.

The provision for those claims (the amount set aside to cover them) has now been fully utilised. Future costs will therefore affect the income statement as they arise, and no upper limit can currently be estimated.

The company expects a positive currency impact around SEK 1.3 billion in Q4. With VOLV B closing at SEK 311.2 on October 22, investors are watching to see if the North American recovery can continue into 2027 and sustain this quarter’s margin gains.

The two factors most likely to influence how the stock trades from here are order intake momentum and updates on the antitrust exposure.
