Micron Technology is currently benefiting from a significant increase in demand for memory solutions for data centers and AI applications. The latest quarterly results show exceptionally strong revenue and profit growth. At the same time, it remains to be seen to what extent the current high margin levels can be sustained beyond the current cycle.

From the Memory Cycle to AI-Driven Growth

Micron Technology is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of memory chips, alongside Samsung and SK Hynix. The company has traditionally been exposed to a highly cyclical market: periods of high demand and rising prices are often followed by capacity expansions and subsequent oversupply. However, the growing adoption of artificial intelligence is currently changing the demand structure in the memory market.

The latest figures illustrate this trend. According to the quarterly report, revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 was $54.2 billion, representing a 379 percent increase compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Adjusted earnings per share were $33.42. In this metric reported by the company, certain expenses, such as stock-based compensation or one-time costs, are excluded from the earnings calculation to better reflect operating performance. The adjusted gross margin for the quarter was approximately 87 percent (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026).

Management’s outlook also remains positive. For the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, Micron expects revenue of $61.5 billion, an adjusted gross margin of approximately 86.25 percent, and adjusted earnings per share of $38.15 (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026).

HBM is becoming a key component of AI systems

A key component of current developments is High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM for short. AI accelerators require large amounts of memory with very high bandwidth, making HBM an essential part of modern data center infrastructure.

Micron has expanded its HBM production accordingly in recent years. According to the company, a large portion of its HBM capacity for 2027 is already covered by customer agreements. At the same time, management expects demand for HBM to remain high in connection with the expansion of AI data centers (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026; Reuters, 30.09.2026).

HBM is particularly relevant for Micron because the product offers a higher value per chip or per unit of memory capacity than traditional memory products. This is also changing the company’s product mix. The trend in HBM demand is therefore significant for both revenue growth and future profitability.

It's Not Just HBM: Demand for Data Center Memory Is Rising

However, the impact of the AI investment cycle is not limited to HBM. AI data centers also require large amounts of traditional DRAM, that is, high-speed server memory, as well as storage solutions for long-term data retention.

This trend is particularly evident in the data center SSD business. According to its own figures, Micron generated nearly $10 billion in revenue from data center SSDs in the fourth quarter. This means that this business segment has grown significantly within a year (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026).

This development expands Micron’s AI narrative beyond HBM. In addition to the direct demand for memory for AI accelerators, additional demand is emerging across the entire data center infrastructure. However, the sustainability of this trend also depends on the investment budgets of major cloud and technology companies.

Supply shortages are currently supporting current price levels

A key factor driving current trends is the relationship between supply and demand. Building new memory capacity is capital-intensive and takes several years. At the same time, demand is rising for DRAM, high-speed memory for servers, as well as NAND flash memory, a non-volatile storage medium used, for example, in SSDs for permanent data storage, and especially HBM, driven by the expansion of data centers. The strength of this trend is evident in the growth of Micron’s data center business: As early as the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, the company generated more than $25 billion in revenue in this segment, which corresponds to an annualized revenue rate of over $100 billion (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026).

Micron anticipates that the markets for DRAM and NAND could remain relatively tight in fiscal year 2027 and beyond. The company is therefore investing heavily in additional production capacity and new manufacturing sites (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026; Reuters, 30.09.2026).

This balance between supply and demand is crucial for the future development of margins. If supply lags behind demand, this can support price levels. Conversely, a more significant expansion of production capacity by Micron and its competitors could lead to a more balanced market again in the medium term.

Record figures boost visibility for 2027

The financial metrics also illustrate the company’s growth. In fiscal year 2026, Micron’s revenue rose from $37.4 billion to $133.2 billion. Adjusted earnings per share increased from $8.29 to $75.52. At the same time, the company generated operating cash flow of $89.7 billion and adjusted free cash flow of $62.3 billion (Micron Technology, 30.09.2026).

Long-term customer agreements provide additional visibility. Micron most recently estimated its contractually agreed-upon customer obligations at approximately $32 billion. Remaining performance obligations stood at approximately $150 billion (Reuters, 30.09.2026).

These metrics provide insight into expected future demand but do not guarantee actual future revenue or profit trends. Market conditions and prices can change relatively quickly, particularly in the memory business.

The Main Risks: Cyclicality and High Capital Expenditures

Despite current trends, Micron remains a capital-intensive and cyclical company. A key uncertainty is how long the current high price and margin levels can be sustained.

Should Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix significantly expand their production capacities, the balance between supply and demand could shift. An increase in supply could consequently lead to falling memory prices and lower margins. This risk is particularly relevant given the company’s currently very high profits.

Added to this are the high capital expenditures. Expanding production capacity requires substantial upfront investment and ties up capital for several years. While the current level of cash flow allows for extensive investments, it also increases the company’s dependence on demand for memory remaining sufficiently high in the long term.

Another risk relates to the AI investment cycle itself. Slower growth in spending by hyperscalers and other data center operators could reduce demand for HBM, DRAM, and SSDs. Furthermore, given the sharp rise in earnings expectations, the stock’s valuation remains a relevant factor for future return performance.

The key question: How sustainable is the current margin level?

For Micron’s future development, therefore, the decisive factor is not so much the short-term question of whether the company can continue to grow. Rather, the question is to what extent the currently exceptionally high margins and cash flows can be sustained over several years.

The current situation is shaped by several factors: high demand for HBM and data center memory, long-term customer agreements, limited short-term production capacity, and, at the same time, extensive investments in capacity expansion. These factors point to a highly dynamic current business environment but do not eliminate the fundamental cyclical nature of the memory market.

For investors, therefore, the relationship between future demand, additional production capacity, memory prices, and the company’s valuation is particularly relevant.

The Most Important Points at a Glance: Structural Change or a Distinct Memory Cycle?

Micron’s business performance is currently driven primarily by growing demand for memory solutions for AI and data center applications. HBM represents a particularly important growth area, while server DRAM and data center SSDs are also gaining in importance.

The latest quarterly results and management’s outlook point to continued strong operational momentum in fiscal year 2027. At the same time, the traditional risks of the memory business remain. In particular, the evolution of supply and demand, future price levels, the level of investment, and trends in AI infrastructure spending will be decisive factors in determining how sustainable Micron’s current earnings growth is.

Consequently, the key focus for the coming quarters lies not so much on revenue growth alone, but rather on whether the current combination of high demand, limited supply, and high margins will persist beyond the current cycle.
