Few assets divide opinion like Bitcoin. Some investors view it as a form of digital gold and a potential store of value, while others regard it as a highly volatile asset influenced by market sentiment, liquidity conditions and risk appetite. Regardless of perspective, Bitcoin remains closely monitored across global financial markets. According to Bloomberg, Bitcoin has risen by approximately 25% in recent weeks. However, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results, and Bitcoin has historically experienced significant price volatility, including substantial losses over short periods. Investors can access Bitcoin through a range of investment products, each with different characteristics, risks and potential outcomes. Before investing, investors should ensure they understand the relevant product features and associated risks.

Why Bitcoin Continues to Attract Attention

Bitcoin differs from many traditional asset classes in several respects. It trades around the clock, can respond rapidly to changes in market sentiment, and is influenced by a broad range of factors, including macroeconomic developments, monetary policy expectations, regulatory changes and institutional investment flows. Unlike fiat currencies, whose supply can expand over time, Bitcoin has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins. This scarcity has led some investors to compare it with commodities such as gold and to view it as a potential store of value. However, scarcity alone does not determine market value, and Bitcoin remains exposed to significant price fluctuations and market risks.

At the same time, Bitcoin is known for its volatility. The cryptocurrency has historically experienced substantial price swings, ranging from periods of rapid appreciation to sharp corrections. These price movements have contributed to the attention Bitcoin has received from investors and market participants. As a result, investment outcomes can vary considerably depending not only on the market's direction but also on the timing and magnitude of price movements.

Bitcoin's performance is often influenced by developments in the U.S. economy, including Federal Reserve policy decisions, inflation data, U.S. dollar strength, market liquidity conditions and flows into investment products such as ETFs and ETCs. Historically, periods of higher interest rates have increased the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin, while periods of lower rates have often coincided with stronger demand for risk-sensitive assets. However, these relationships may not hold in all market environments.

Accessing Bitcoin Through Structured Products

Investing in Bitcoin does not necessarily require investors to hold the cryptocurrency directly or manage a cryptocurrency wallet. Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) provide another way of gaining exposure to Bitcoin through traditional financial-market infrastructure.

Listed and traded on exchanges, these products can generally be bought and sold through a brokerage account, subject to the relevant market and product conditions. Their structure can provide exposure to movements in the price of Bitcoin without requiring investors to hold the underlying cryptocurrency themselves.

As investor interest in digital assets has evolved, the range of exchange-traded products offering exposure to Bitcoin has also expanded. Today, a range of products is available that provide different forms of exposure to Bitcoin. Investors can choose between different types of products depending on their investment objectives, risk tolerance, level of knowledge and experience, and market outlook. Some investors may prefer unleveraged exposure to Bitcoin, while others may seek products designed to provide leveraged exposure to price movements in the underlying asset. Bull and Bear certificates are one example. Depending on their specific terms, these products are designed to provide amplified exposure to either upward or downward movements in Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a highly volatile asset. Its price may fluctuate significantly over short periods and can be affected by market sentiment, regulatory developments, liquidity conditions and other factors.

Understanding Bull and Bear Certificates

Bull and Bear certificates are designed for investors who have a specific directional view on the underlying asset. A Bull certificate is generally designed to provide positive leveraged exposure to movements in the underlying, while a Bear certificate is designed to provide leveraged exposure in the opposite direction.

Leverage increases the sensitivity of the certificate to movements in the underlying asset. As a result, both gains and losses can be amplified compared with unleveraged exposure, and investors may lose part or all of their invested capital.

An important characteristic of many leveraged Bull and Bear certificates is that the leverage is reset daily. This means that the performance of the certificate over several trading days cannot necessarily be determined simply by multiplying Bitcoin's cumulative price change by the stated leverage factor. The sequence and magnitude of daily price movements can also influence the overall performance of the investment.

For this reason, investors considering leveraged products should pay particular attention to the product's specific terms and conditions, including leverage, reset mechanisms, financing arrangements and other applicable features. Leveraged products are complex financial instruments and may not be appropriate for all investors. Investors should ensure that they understand the product's characteristics and risks before investing.

Factors That May Influence Bitcoin’s Future Development

Recent market developments illustrate the range of factors that can influence Bitcoin's price. For example, Bitcoin appreciated significantly during 2020 and 2021, a period marked by substantial fiscal and monetary support measures introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Some market participants viewed these measures as supportive of demand for alternative assets. Looking ahead, some investors point to concerns regarding government debt levels, fiscal sustainability and the long-term purchasing power of fiat currencies as factors that could continue to support interest in assets such as Bitcoin. Others highlight the potential impact of increasing institutional participation and further development of regulatory frameworks.

At the same time, Bitcoin remains sensitive to shifts in market sentiment and broader financial conditions. During 2022, Bitcoin experienced substantial price declines as central banks raised interest rates and investors reduced exposure to a range of higher-risk assets. While past performance is not indicative of future results, the episode illustrates how changing liquidity conditions and investor sentiment can coincide with periods of heightened volatility in digital asset markets. Developments among large corporate Bitcoin holders, regulatory uncertainty and changing investor risk appetite may weigh on prices, while geopolitical or macroeconomic events can contribute to periods of heightened volatility.

Leveraged Exposure to Bitcoin Price Movements

Bitcoin's volatility is one of its defining characteristics, and significant intraday and short-term price movements are not uncommon. While volatility increases investment risk and may result in significant losses, it can also increase the frequency and magnitude of market movements. As a result, periods of heightened volatility often attract increased investors attention with a defined market view.

Bull and Bear certificates allow investors to take a position on both rising and falling Bitcoin prices. Depending on the direction of the market and the specific characteristics of the product, leveraged exposure increases sensitivity to movements in the underlying asset. Therefore, even relatively modest changes in Bitcoin's price can have a pronounced impact on the value of the investment.

Rather than focusing solely on long-term forecasts, investors may also use these instruments to express short-term views on market direction. However, as leverage amplifies both gains and losses, investment outcomes are influenced not only by the direction of the market, but also by the magnitude and timing of price movements. Investors may lose part or all of their invested capital.

The daily reset of leverage can also affect performance over periods longer than one trading day, particularly when the underlying asset experiences significant volatility. For these reasons, it is important to understand the characteristics of leveraged products, as well as the importance of effective risk management and active monitoring, remains important when considering whether leveraged exposure to Bitcoin is appropriate for an investor’s circumstances and risk tolerance.
