Vontobel was the first issuer to launch a participation certificate on Bitcoin in 2017. But the landscape in the crypto world has also changed over time and many new names have been added. We are therefore pleased to be able to introduce a new product that enables you to participate in the performance of five crypto currencies in a diversified manner.

Probably the most famous of the crypto currencies is making a comeback. Since the beginning of the year, Bitcoin has gained by around 20%. That's a remarkable figure when you consider that the year is still very young. But the rise in the share price is not the only reason why Bitcoin has increasingly come back into focus. Because the next and thus third "halving" is due in May of this year; the reward that miners receive for maintaining the network will therefore be lower. Historically, the Bitcoin price has risen sharply after each of the halvings. However, it is far from certain that this will happen again this year. Past performance gives no indication of future developments. However, interesting opportunities could arise for investors.

Participation Certificates in crypto-currencies offer investors uncomplicated access to a relatively young asset class. While Vontobel, as a pioneer in this field, has been mapping Bitcoin in a certificate since 2017, the range has been expanded over time to include other crypto currencies. This was made possible by the emergence of new currencies, which have also increased their market share - and therefore their liquidity. As can be seen in the chart below, a few years ago Bitcoin was still the sole stag with a market share of over 90%. Today, its share is only 65%, with ether (8.5%) and ripple (4.8%) in second and third place.

If you as an investor expect a rising performance of the largest crypto currencies, but do not want to invest in a specific one, we now offer a participation certificate on a crypto portfolio. At initial fixing, the portfolio consists of Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether, Ripple and Litecoin at 20% each. There is no fixed term. The product is traded in euros and is tradable both on and off the stock exchange. The investor bears the issuer risk, the currency risk and the risk of the underlying.
